Cliff Richard has been making music since the 50s. In this look at Cliff Richard songs we have to do it justice by starting from the beginning don’t we? Cliff Richard was born Harry Rodger Webb on the 14th of October 1940. He has sold over 250 million records worldwide and over 21 million single sales in the UK.

When he was sixteen Harry Webb became interested in skiffle and his father bought him a guitar. He formed a vocal harmony group at school called The Quintones. He then moved onto singing in the Dick Teague skiffle group.

Harry then became the lead singer of the Drifters an English Rock and Roll group. They are not connected to the American group of the same name, The Drifters consisted of Ian Samwell (guitar), Terry Smart (drums) and Norman Mitham (guitar). None of the three played with the Shadows who Cliff was to sing with later. He had by now changed his name to Cliff Richard, the Richard part was a tribute to ‘Little Richard’ as Cliff loved his music and style.

The group were recommended by an agent to Norrie Paramor for an audition. By now the group were known as Cliff Richard and The Drifters and Paramor wanted them to record a song called ‘Schoolboy Crush’ they were allowed to choose the b side themselves and they chose a song written by Ian Samwell called ‘Move It’.

It is not known how Move It became the A side but it reached number 2 in the UK charts.

In 1961 Cliff Richard starred in a modest budget musical movie called The Young Ones. Unexpectedly, it broke box office records. The formula was repeated in 1963 with Summer Holiday. 1963 turned out to be Cliffs last year as a teenage idol as The Beatles were about to dominate that market.

He then concentrated on recording ballads for a slightly older audience. He released songs like The Twelfth Of Never and he had another number 1 hit in 1965 with The Minute You’re Gone. Cliff’s records over the following years leaned heavily towards the middle of the road market. In 1968 Cliff had his first number one song in 3 years with the British eurovision song contest entry Congratulations.

Cliff publicly announced his conversion to Christianity in 1969 and devoted a lot of time to his interest in religious matters. He even seriously considered ending his musical career at this point to become a full time teacher of religion. We are all happy he continued to tour and releasing records.

For the first half of the 1970s, Richard struggled to achieve big hits, apart from his Eurovision Song Contest entry “Power to All Our Friends”. It was not until 1975 that Richard changed the focus of his recording career from singles to albums, beginning with the recording of the I’m Nearly Famous album. It produced the lead single “Miss You Nights”, released in late 1975 and “Devil Woman”, which became his first US top 10 hit and biggest US hit. From this time, the singles were generally lifted from the albums (although not exclusively). In 1979, Richard’s single “We Don’t Talk Anymore” became the highest selling record of his career achieving worldwide sales over 4 million.
