Welcome to this look at the George Harrison songs we all know and love. George Harrison was born in Liverpool on the 25th February 1943 the youngest of 4 children. He sadly passed away on the 29th November 2001. There is still though a lot of interest in his songs to this day.

He was of course a member of The Beatles but he also did have a great solo career after the band split up. He also had success with The Travelling Wilburys.

Let’s start with his work with the Beatles. On their first album Please Please Me released in 1963 album George did the lead vocals on two tracks Chains and Do You Want To Know A Secret.

Also in 1963 With The Beatles was released. George wrote and sang lead vocals on the track Don’t Bother Me. He also sang lead vocals on the Beatles version of the Chuck Berry song Roll Over Beethoven which was the first track on the B side of the album. He shared the vocals with John Lennon on a Smoky Robinson written song called You Really Got A Hold On Me and  finally on this album he did the vocals on Devil In Her Heart.

A Hard Days Night was their next album released in 1964. George sang the vocals on I’m Happy Just To Dance With You. Later in 1964 the band released the Beatles For Sale album and George Harrison sang the lead vocals on the Carl Perkins song Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby. He also shared the vocals with Lennon and McCartney on Words Of Love a Buddy Holly song.

The following year 1965 George had 2 songs that he wrote and performed on the Help album. The tracks were called I Need You and You Like Me Too Much. On the Rubber Soul album also released in 1965  he performed 2 more of hts own songs Think For Yourself and If I Needed Someone.

He had 3 of his songs on the next Beatles album Revolver in 1966. Taxman, Love You Too and I Want To Tell You.

He did Within You Without You on the 1967 release of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The Beatles was released in 1968 and became known as the white album because of the album cover. George had 4 of his songs on this album.  While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Piggies, Long Long Long and Savoy Truffle.

 

 

 

In January 1969 they released the album Yellow Submarine album and George contributed 2 songs Only A Northern Song and It’s All Too Much.

Later in 1969 Abbey Road was released and George had written and performed 2 classic songs Something and Here Comes The Sun.

In their twelfth and final studio album Let It Be released in 1970  George had 2 of his own songs. I Me Mine and For You Blue he also co-wrote Dig It with the other members of the band.

The Travelling Wilbury’s

The traveling Wilburys were formed in April 1988. They were a short lived band only releasing 3 singles and two albums between 1988-1990.  The band consisted of George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty.

They released their first album The Traveling Wilburys Vol 1 in October 1988. It reached number 16 in the UK album charts and number 3 in the US charts. It did go to number 1 in Australia and Canada though. They had chart success with 3 singles from the album. Handle With Care which reached number 21 in the UK and 2 in the US. End Of The Line made number 52 in the UK and 2 in the US and Heading For The Light which reached number 7 in the US.

 

Sadly in December of 1988 Roy Orbison died of a heart attack.

Not wishing to bring in a replacement for Roy Orbison the 4 remaining members got together to record their 2nd album called The Traveling Wilburys Vol 3. which was released in 1990 and got to number 14 in the UK and 11 in the US. They had 3 chart entries from this album too. She’s My Baby which reached number 79 in the UK and 2 in the US. Inside Out made it to number 16 in the US and Wilbury Twist that made number 46 in the US.

They also had a minor hit in the UK with Nobody’s Child which peaked at 44 in the UK. This was a charity single and the proceeds went to the Romanian Angel Appeal Foundation, Read the full story here.

 

 

 

George Harrison sadly passed away in November 2001 but his memory lives on.
