Elvis Presley Early History

Elvis Aron Presley was born on the 8th January 1935 in a tiny house in East Tupelo one of the poorest parts of Mississippi. Medical diagnosis was unsophisticated in those days in poor neighborhoods and nobody had even guessed Elvis’ mother Gladys was expecting twins. Sadly his twin was stillborn, he was formally named Jesse Garon and was buried in a tiny coffin the next day in an unmarked grave in a hillside cemetery.

Elvis first started singing aged two at church, Elvis said ‘ the church gave me the only training I ever had, the rest came naturally’ An eight-year-old Elvis got up and sang Old Shep at the church one day and the school principal thought he was good enough to enter a local talent contest. This is where Elvis earned his first ever performing fee singing Old Shep and coming 2nd in the competition. The prize was 5 dollars.

When Elvis was 13 the family moved to Memphis Tennessee, his father thought he would have a better chance of finding work there. His father stopped smoking and saved up 12 dollars to buy Elvis his first guitar. He learned to play by listening to the radio and borrowing phonographic records from neighbours. He left school in 1953 and joined the precision tool company, then drove trucks for Crown Electric for 35 dollars a week.

 

 

The Sun Connection

Sam Phillips A one time radio announce and engineer was opening a recording studio in Memphis, which Elvis often passed while he was driving his truck. Memphis recording service studio provided a walk in for locals who could record 2 songs for 4 dollars, Elvis knew about this and one day parked his truck and walked into the studio. He told the studio manager Marion Keisker his requirements and said he would like to accompany himself on guitar. He was doing the recording for his mother’s birthday and sang ‘My Happiness’ a fifties hit for the ink spots and an old-fashioned weepie song called ‘That’s When Your Heartaches Begin’, it was very low key.

 

 

Marion Keisker knew her music and she knew the music Sam Phillips liked. Phillips always felt his road to becoming a millionaire was to find himself a white boy that could sing coloured style. He eventually found time to listen to his music, and called him in for a meeting. Unimpressed by an early effort Phillips is supposed to have said ‘Hey kid what can you do?’ Elvis replied ‘I can do anything’ ‘Then do it’ Phillips said and Elvis proceeded to do a mixture of gospel, hymns, country, hillbilly and blues. He also took a Dean Martin ballad-style something the young Elvis was impressed by at the time.

 

 

Phillips was interested but had to find the right song. One day Elvis was messing about in the studio with his guitar and started doing That’s All Right but gave the impression that he was copying the more dynamic local black singers. As Sam Phillips tells it, he uttered ‘ I don’t know what it is you are doin’ but keep doin’ it’ So as Elvis Scotty Moore and Bill Black done a second treatment of the song Sam exclaimed ‘God, they’re gonna run us right outta town when they hear this’

That’s All Right did well eventually selling 20,000 copies, and it made number 3 in the Memphis country sales chart and briefly appeared in other local charts. We all know what happened after that. See below for Elvis’ discography.

16th August 1977

All Elvis fans will know that the above date was the day that Elvis died aged 42. A very sad day and a big shock for fans across the world. Elvis’ funeral was held at Graceland on18th August 1977. Outside the gates a car ploughed into the crowds killing two women. 80,000 people lined the route to Forest Hill Cemetery, where Elvis was buried next to his mother. In late August an attempt was made to steal Elvis’ body so Presley and his mother’s remains were reburied in Graceland’s Meditation Centre on October 2nd 1977.

Elvis songs did make the singles charts after his death when he reached number 25 in the UK in 1982 with a release of Are You Lonesome Tonight the live version where Elvis starts laughing at the backing singers vocals. In 1995, he made the UK charts again at 21 with a version of Twelfth Of Never. He then had a surprise number one with a remix of A Little Less Conversation by JXL and finally the following year another remix of Rubberneckin’ by Paul Oakenfield made it to number 3.
